Challenge

When Adam first met his YouthStart project worker, Sean, he was feeling de-motivated and without direction.

He was in:

  • An emotionally abusive relationship
  • Facing hostility from his partner’s parents
  • Struggling to find sustainable employment

Adam’s mental health had deteriorated, and he was experiencing financial hardship during the cost of living crisis. The situation left him lacking purpose, confidence, and belief in his own abilities.

Our Approach

Adam was referred to YouthStart via the Jobs and Benefits Office. Recognising the need for emotional stability before job applications, Sean provided regular one-to-one mentoring.

Key Steps:

  1. ‘Walk and talk’ sessions in local parks and shopping centres — creating space to share his story and set goals.
  2. Practical support with travel costs, food, and essentials.
  3. Skills and career planning — identifying strengths and building an achievable pathway to employment.
  4. Hospitality training in YouthAction’s youth café — gaining OCNNI Level 1 in Customer Service & Barista Skills.
  5. Job search and preparation — CV writing, application support, and interview coaching.

Adam applied for jobs with Stena Line and Haven Holiday Park, securing offers from both. He chose a temporary summer role in Wales.

Sean coordinated the journey: taxi to Belfast docks → ferry to Liverpool → train to Wales → bus to the park.

  • Relocated to Wales for seasonal work, building confidence, independence, and a social network.

  • Secured a full-time contract with Haven Holiday Park and moved into on-site apartment.
  • Achieved financial stability, personal independence, and renewed purpose.
  • Maintains contact with Sean and has started giving back — buying the coffee at their last meet-up.

“Adam really needed one-to-one support. We’d walk, talk, and share a coffee, building trust while making sure his basic needs were met. Listening was key to helping him believe in his future.”

    — Sean, YouthStart Project Worker

“YouthStart was life changing for me. I was in a really bad place beforehand. My YouthStart worker, Sean, helped me to get a career, move country, and really appreciate myself. I am happy, content, and have a reason to get up every morning.”
