Kaleidoscope Outreach Model

The Kaleidoscope model has been developing over the past 8 years in Belfast, Banbridge, South Armagh, Tyrone, Carrickfergus and Derry. The main aim behind Kaleidoscope is to create an issue-based piece of theatre with a group of 20 young people aged between 13 and 18. The model uses high quality arts training underpinned by youth work principles to develop the participants artistically, personally and socially. Kaleidoscope also provides young people with a platform from which they can have their voices heard within their communities. When targeting communities in which to run Kaleidoscope we ensure that we select disadvantaged areas where young people wouldn't normally have the opportunity to access arts activities.

Each Kaleidoscope programme is tailor made for the community in which it takes place and for the young people taking part. To ensure that the project meets the needs of the community it is delivered in partnership with a local community organisation who work alongside YouthAction staff in the planning and delivery of the project.

Recruitment of the young people will take place in local schools, youth centres and in each area. This recruitment will be carried out by the project co-ordinator/ Director and a worker from the partnership organisation. 20 young people will be recruited in each area as the cast of each project.

Once recruited the casts will take part in a twenty week Kaleidoscope programme delivered by our professional artistic staff in a local venue.

During the first ten weeks of the programme the young people will develop drama, dance and devising skills through skills workshops as well as confidence, personal and social skills through team work activities. They will also identify and explore issues they feel are important to them within their communities through issue-based theatre workshops.

The last 10 weeks of the programme then involve the cast devising and rehearsing of a thirty minute issue-based theatre performance piece under the guidance and support of our staff.

The piece will then be performed in their communities to invited audiences of their peers, families and community representatives. These performances as well as being of the highest artistic quality demonstrating the skills that they have gained will also give the young people a platform on which they can express their feelings and beliefs on the issues they have selected.

The young people involved in Kaleidoscope programmes have the opportunity to achieve a nationally recognised Asdan Youth Achievement Award.

A peer educator from the Rainbow Factory also has the opportunity to shadow the project co-ordinator/ Director and develop skills in project facilitation, devising and directing.
