Sense of Belonging 1997

In 1997 YouthAction Northern Ireland carried out an Action Research Project into the needs, hopes and aspirations of young people (14-25 yrs) in three rural communities &ndash Castlederg, South Mournes and the Glens of Antrim.

The research identified the following

  • There is considerable alienation and social exclusion of young people as a group from their communities, yet they clearly have a desire to be more involved in them
  • There is a lack of clarity on concepts of rural regeneration and community development and the extent to which young people can be included in such processes
  • No appropriate infrastructure exists to address this issue strategically, or to support emerging networks such as Rural Community Network or Partnership Board clusters, which hope to address youth issues

It also provided considerable insight into current practice in relation to community regeneration and community development, and highlighted the exclusion of young people from the decisions being taken within their communities.
