Represent - Young Women Take Control

YouthAction Northern Ireland’s Gender Equality Unit works with young women to raise their expectations of themselves and what the world around them should offer. NIWEP and YouthAction NI strive to make young women visible in society, encourage them to be themselves and challenge stereotypes and inequalities they face. NIWEP have secured funding to deliver a project, in partnership with YouthAction Northern Ireland, which engages young women aged 14-25 in the world of politics and in taking a stand in the world. The European elections are taking place in May so this short programme will have a strong focus on the relevance of the European Parliament for young women and women.

Young women with nothing to say??

Young women feel disengaged from politics. From speaking to them, they feel they lack understanding of how the ‘small p’ politics they live in everyday (education, health etc) connects to the ‘bigger P’ politics (Stormont, European parliament).REPRESENT’ will create awareness around this, the need to vote but also a safe space where young women can discuss gender and the challenges this brings. To make this an exciting project for as many young women as possible this is where YOU come in!! For full representation of many young women, we wish to invite you to take part in this project with a group of young women from your area or your centre.

This project is called ‘REPRESENT #YOUNGWOMENTAKECONTROL’ and it will happen in three stages.

March 2014: Stage one- Prior to the main event we have three sessions that we would like you to deliver to your group of young women. These sessions are in a resource which we will give you so all the young women will get the same experience and learning. Charlene will meet with each of the workers individually before the sessions take place so workers are confident in delivering them. (If needed Charlene can also co-facilitate on these sessions.)

April 2014: Stage two- This will be an event which all the young women will attend. This event will be informal with interactive exercises such as speed dating with women leaders & politicians followed by mock voting. Through creative activities young women will begin to see they can have a role in politics and find different ways that they can take part.

April 2014 onwards Stage three: The final stage is the creation of a webpage linked to NIWEP. This will be created by any young women at the event who show interest in becoming involved with this.
